Few topics have generated as much wide-ranging interdisciplinary interest as sound in the past couple of decades. This might have something to do with some scholars’ steady efforts to advance the study of media and mediality beyond the popular realm of sight and images; it could also be an outcome of the historically unprecedented access to sonic data, some of which have been made available for the first time by newly digitized venues. While it may be impossible to determine the exact factors that have led to the thriving forms of research that constitute contemporary soundstudies, it is a timely moment to host a forum at HKU showcasing different interesting approaches, debates, and conceptual as well as practical innovations. Such a forum would bring together scholars from different fields and subfields who are contributing to sound studies; it would also encourage research initiatives at HKU in a subject area where the humanities, interpretative social sciences, and some sciences can have productive interactions.
