Leave of Absence

A student who cannot attend class because of medical reasons should write to the Head of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures for a leave of absence. Sick leave should be supported by a copy of the certificate signed by a registered medical practitioner.

A student who wishes to apply for leave of absence for non-medical reasons should apply to the Head of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures in writing prior to the commencement of leave, stating the reasons for which the leave of absence is sought and providing supporting documents.

Withdrawals

If for any reason a student cannot attend the course for which he or she is registered, the student should notify the Head of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures immediately in writing, so that the place can be offered to another applicant. Tuition fees paid will not be refunded upon withdrawal.

Self-access Language Learning Facilities

The School of Modern Languages and Cultures' Practice Laboratory on the 6th floor of K.K. Leung Building contains a sizable collection of language learning materials which the students may use for language practice from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Mondays to Fridays. The facilities are also equipped with satellite TV broadcasting programmes in various languages.

Class Schedules

Holidays:
Unless special arrangements are made, there will be no classes on Sundays and Public holidays (bank holidays), and University holidays, which include the University Foundation Day, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve (afternoon and evening), and Lunar New Year’s Eve (afternoon and evening).

Typhoons and Rainstorms:
When the Tropical Storm Warning Signal No. 8 (or a higher number) or the Rainstorm Black Warning Signal are hoisted, the following arrangements will apply

a) For classes and examinations that have not yet started

If either of the warnings is hoisted or in force at or after 6:00 a.m. All morning classes and examinations commencing before 2:00 p.m. will be cancelled automatically.
If either of the warnings is hoisted or in force at or after 11:00 a.m. All afternoon and evening classes and examinations commencing at any time from 2:00 p.m. onwards will be cancelled automatically.

b) For classes and examinations that have already started

When Tropical Storm Warning Signal No. 8 or above is hoisted All classes will be suspended immediately.
All examinations to continue until the end of that examination session.
When Rainstorm Black Warning Signal is hoisted All classes and examinations, except those held outdoors, will continue unless the venue is considered to be of potential risk to students.

For outdoor classes and examinations, the responsible staff members on the spot should suspend the activities immediately, ensure that all students are taken to a safe place, and remain there until it is safe for them to return home.

When Tropical Storm Warning Signal No. 3 or the Rainstorm Red Warning Signal is in force, it should be assumed that all classes and examinations will be held as scheduled unless an announcement to the contrary has been made by the School.

Other Information

1. Applicants are normally required to have reached the age of 18, and to provide a HKID number or passport number for admission assessment and student records.

2. The School of Modern Languages and Cultures reserves the right to cancel a course if there is insufficient enrolment or other unforeseen difficulties arise that prevent its being held as advertised.

3. The Head of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures may, at his discretion, refuse to admit an applicant.

4. Eating and drinking in the classrooms is not allowed.

5. All mobile phones and pagers should be turned off during class.

6. Smoking is prohibited on the University Campus.

7. No audio recording is allowed, except with the permission of the Head of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, and subject to any conditions stipulated when such permission is granted.

8. The Head of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures has the right to exclude from class any student(s) whose behavior disturbs the rest of the class.
