FRENCH CERTIFICATE

1. French - Level 1 ( French I - Part 1 & French I - Part 2 )

French I - Part 1
This course is open to complete beginners interested in studying French language and culture. The aim is to provide students with a good foundation in contemporary French along with a better understanding of France and the French-speaking world. The focus is mostly on developing speaking and listening skills, with the support of reading and writing materials, and together with grammar and vocabulary drills and pronunciation practice.

French I - Part 2
This is a continuation of French I - Part I. The course will build on the work done in the first period of the course and introduce more elaborate features of the language. Its main objective is to prepare students to face many varied real life contexts.

Internal assessment throughout the course will be provided. The evaluation will be based on 100% coursework. (Tests and homework 40%, final test 60%).

After the completion of Level 1 (Part 1 & Part 2), students should have reached a standard consistent with Level A1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

Students should be able to:
• Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
• Introduce themselves and other and ask and answer question about personal details such as places, people and things.
• Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

2. French - Level 2 ( French II - Part 1 & French II - Part 2 )

French II - Part 1
This course is open to students having completed Level 1. Other applicant with comparable background (around 100 hours) may also be admitted upon interview. The intention of this course is to build on the fundamentals already acquired and widen exposure and practice to more elaborate aspects of the language through extensive use of written, audio and video materials.

French II - Part 2
This is a continuation of French II Part I. Focus is mostly on furthering speaking and listening skills, but also to work on more advanced reading and writing tasks. Knowledge in grammar is also reinforced. The main objective of this course is to prepare students to get involved in varied real-life contexts, face to face contact with French speakers.

Internal assessment throughout the course will be provided. The evaluation will be based on 100% coursework. (Tests and homework 40%, final test 60%).

After the completion of Level 2 (Part 1 & Part 2), students should have reached a standard consistent with Level A2.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

Students should be able to:
• Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance.
• Communicate in a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
• Describe simple terms aspects of one’s background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate needs.

3. French - Level 3 ( French III - Part 1 & French III - Part 2 )

French III - Part 1
This course is open to students having completed Level 2 or who are able to claim a comparable achievement from another institution (between 180 and 200 hours of contact hours). The aim of this course is to improve students’ skills through various activities and practice. The focus will be on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation drills according to the student’s needs.

French III - Part 2
This is a continuation of French III - Part I. The emphasis will be laid on language learning strategies and autonomous learning. Ample use of authentic materials in reference to current affairs in France and elsewhere will help students progress in their command of the language and understanding of the sociocultural environment.

Internal assessment throughout the course will be provided. The evaluation will be based on 100% coursework. (Tests and homework 40%, final test 60%).

After the completion of Level 3 (Part 1 & Part 2), students should have reached a standard consistent with Level A2.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

Students should be able to:
• Understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters.
• Deal with most situations likely to arise whilst traveling in an area where the language is spoken.
• Produce simple connected text on topic which are familiar or of personal interest.
• Describe experiences and events
• Briefly give reasons and explanations for opinion and plans.

Students who have successfully completed Level 3 will be invited to sit for the Certificate examination leading to the award of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures Certificate in French.
